fear

The pressure is intense. Fear is creeping inside me, just like how it did last year. I was taken back by the reading list because most of them does not sound familiar. I took a peek at past year papers and honestly I could only do certain parts of the few questions that feels familiar. The good thing is I have about a little more than a week to do this. I have to face this. Because if I don't, at the end of the day, I will regret.

the H word

Boooooooo! (as in jeering boo not jump-in-and-try-to-scare-people kind of boo or the o-m-g-cuteness-overload boo) I have no will, none at all, to pick up any notes/reading materials/assignments AND IT'S JUST A FEW MONTHS AWAY FROM THE MAJOR EXAMS! Does it spell out d-e-a-d for you? It sure does for me. Especially when I spent the whole of winter break doing nothing productive other than reading something that I absolutely have no idea what it was. Hang on. Oh yes, it was Microeconomics and there were lines and words on the paper. Either way, d-e-a-d it is.

I have been feeling mighty lazy lately and today is the worst ever since Lent started. At least I paid attention during my make up Accounting class (skipped yesterday's class because of the recent disease), took notes for Corporate Law (it was painfully boring trust me) and ??? for Microecons. To be fair today was quite hectic because I just had to schedule the make up class before 3 hours worth of lectures, which adds up to a grand total of 4 hours straight. I thought I did quite well when I paid attention to most of the Law lecture and first 20 minutes or less of Microecons. *beams* I Spent the later quarter of Law imagining my lecturer as a blonde lawyer (legally blonde) and how fashionable she must have been because she wore this patent black coat/raincoat today plus her hair is styled in quite a glamorous way. She is probably older than 60.

The evening was spent deliberating with myself whether I should get a couple of things from ASOS. My very considerate and caring housemate decided to bring my attention to the fact that NUS 20% discount is back. My reaction started off with my excitement escalating uncontrollably followed by a very brisk crash as I brought myself back to reality. As of yesterday, I decided to curb my spending by leaving only £20 in my wallet. January Challenge: £20 for the rest of the month. It took me quite a bit of courage to give it a pass but I'm glad I did myself that favour. :)

I shall now do myself another favour by getting some work done! Woohoo~

Ciao Bella

Birthday boy, his cake and his sweet housemate :) (and cousin- standing)

I had fun at a birthday party last night! It ended off with the birthday boy being drunk and muttering random things e.g. spilling liquid all over his pants, "I love the wall", "so when I drink I become a woman and when you drink you become a man?!"- inside joke but a really funny one at that. Everyone kept toasting him with birthday drinks! The culprit in red (above picture) supposedly drank 3 shots of pure Vodka straight. I was impressed when she downed one after another like gulp, fill, gulp, fill, gulp!! A short moment later someone told me that it's just plain water. LOL?! But great job everyone! It was real difficult to get him to reach that state.

Anyway...

day x+n of packing

Packing never seems to end. Especially when I have this ever-growing idea of mine to spruce up a warm and comfortable room. It's difficult to stop it at an idea because, unfortunately for this case, inspiration keeps coming! Either that or something doesn't go right, hence the need to think of a replacement. Safely to say I'm more or less done with thinking of what goes where. The things that I am left to do: wait for fitted sheet and pillow cases to come, wash my new duvet sheet (which is so soft!!), install the sheets and new pillows (boohoo for hollowfibres), place the drawer liners to the specified (lucky) shelves in first wardrobe, arrange my second wardrobe, get curtains, ect. Yep, there's still a whole lot of actions to be carried out. I can't believe I'm spending so much time into this. It better be worth it!

Year 2 started out pretty mundanely, sadly. Currently it feels like it'll just be another year in uni, but we shall see. It's still too fast to judge. My timetable issn't too bad. My Mondays are INtEnsiVe: 9am to 6pm. What say you? However I'm still in the middle of course selection, which is a total bummer since I've been bugged with the indecisive disease. Microeconomics or Macroeconomics? I started off thinking "definitely Micro" but now that term has started, I've decided to go with Macro and is sort of enjoying it. But! It's just the first week. Lectures always start off, for the most of them, nicely and make you go "ooh this issn't so bad after all". But when I look at the exam paper for Macro it is quite intimidating as it is mainly essay-based questions. Micro is more of proving equations and applying them to the question. It does look challenging because it means that if you don't get the equation right, then that's the end of it. Haih. I shall reserve some time before bed thinking about this.

Back to packing...

results are out!

Mobile blogging once more :) it's really addictive because I can just lie down in any style I like & blog using my phone. The fact that I can swing the device (phone) around easily means that I benefit from the extra flexibility. I'm definitely digging typing on this super compact mini QWERTY!! The bad side is I can't make a new paragraph (still unsure of how I should go about doing it) so it can be a bit of a pain reading this. Sorry ya'll! But let's face the facts. There aren't many lovely people (like you all) who reads what I write. Anyway, before this gets too long... A couple of short updates! 1) I went back to Indonesia for the past 6 days. 2) Shaun happened to get himself hospitalised on day I went back for the next 6 days as well. 3) My exam results are out!! I shan't elaborate much since it's 'short updates'. 1) is an old and boring topic that I shan't share more. 2) is too long so I'll cover that next time. 3). Omg! I passed every single paper! I'm ecstatic. Even though many look down on my grades, which I fully understand why they do that, some exceeded what I've been expecting. The disappointment is there, but not as bad considering the fact that I screwed it uppp urgh!! 1.5 mark away from a 2:1 omg! (Yea yea you can laugh/look down on my 2:2) Ahh well~ it's getting pretty exciting that I'll be entering a fresh new academic year and living with an... acquaintance. It's going to be a new experience once more! Not sure what to expect but let's just hope for the best! :)

an unexpected finding (or two)

Guess what I had for dinner! Clue: something fishy.

It's Friday!! I'm quite unsure about the level of excitement I am having right now. No school for the next couple of days, true, but the level of assignments they've set us for the coming week is unbelievable. I have not started on any of them so that really suck! Plus, the packing I'll need to do... urgh. Can't they just give us a break already? Why the influx of assignments due on the very last week? (why am I so dead lazy?)

Let's digress away from the sad stuff. Happy stuff! FOOD! Yummo. My sister was supposed to make a dish with salmon for tonight's dinner but she had to cancel that due to OT. I was so prepared to have it for dinner! It's like my taste buds are all excited and ready to taste the fishy-ness erupting in my mouth but had to disappoint due to the last minute change. You know like how when you expect something for a meal but you didn't get what you want in the end and had the craving for something similar? That's basically how I felt an hour ago.

In an attempt to satisfy my unsatisfied craving, I went to ransack the dried food cabinet and found a long lost instant sauce. Next to it was a packet of unfinished spaghetti. In less than a split second, I decided how I should satisfy myself in the next 30 minutes. I was really glad that preparation took less than 10 minutes and there was no hassle at all! Cook spaghetti till al dente, take it out of the water, mix in the sauce and seaweed (they both came in the packet), wash a couple of lettuce leaves and serve! I just had to take a couple of pictures of the end process, above and the following:

It looks a bit like Chinese noodles doesn't it? Like mushroom and mince pork noodles, or something similar. It's actually Japanese sauce.

MEN-TAI-KO!! Absolute yummo! The base is made of cods' eggs I think. It tastes really fishy, totally fatty and a bit sourish. It has this small balls-y texture because of the cods' eggs. I cringed for a while upon the virgin taste but it gets pretty addictive soon after.

I've been indulging in so much good and fatty food lately! Singapore is going to make me even more horizontally altered, le sigh. I haven't been gym-ing much lately. I was supposed to work-out more on Wednesday but the gym had to close after the pilates class I attended due to electrical failure. & because of that, I was not able to attend the calorie-burning class, Fight Klub!! It's just a fancy name for kick-boxing really.

Speaking of gym, something pretty cool happened on Wednesday. It was after we were told that Fight Klub had to be cancelled (before they told us they had to close the gym). We were asking the trainer about whether we can continue without the lights, air-con and music. The girl who was seated next to me asked me if I were Singaporean upon hearing my accent. So obviously I told her I am Indonesian but is just like a Singaporean and the usual stuff. We started chatting and I found out that she's a Singaporean (she doesn't look like one since she's mixed and she has un-singaporean accent) and studies at LSE!

Not cool enough? Well, today I met her again for Fight Klub and chatted after the session. It was then when I found out that she was from SMSS! COOL or not?!! It's so rare to find SMSS girls in the UK, let alone LSE (the Rs dominates this place). Another cool thing that I found out was... *drum rolls* SHE WAS ONE OF THE MORNING EXERCISE GIRLS! We used to have this morning exercise routine on one of the weekdays (was it Wednesday/ Friday?) and she was one of the demonstrators (alongside Benny and Mr Lee if I'm not wrong, or was it Mdm Rossenah?). No wonder I found that she looks so familiar! (Actually I was thinking whether all the Eurasians have the typical face because they all look pretty much the same- pretty nonetheless, yes pun intended if you didn't get that) She's already in her final year though. Hmm, I wonder if there are other SMSS girls at LSE...

Anyway, I digressed quite a lot didn't I? I've spent so much time typing this out too T_T oh well. It's going to be a busy, busy day tomorrow (onwards)!!

Random: I've started using Google Chrome today. It's so fast O_O

LSE attempts some Biology

I'm being studious at the moment by watching recorded stats (optional) extra lecture. It's such a pity that I missed watching it real life! The lecturer likes cracking some minor humour to keep the bunch alive. For example:

The big circle depicts an "egg"(biology teachers would have killed me if I were to use that term) and next to it are the 4 sperms. Yea, he's doing probability on XY and XX. Reminds me of the good ol' science times! :D

& not to mention the other innuendo-s. Weirdly enough, the maths lecturers are always the ones who try to make jokes during lectures! Or maybe the friendly ones are the ones that I've got...

3 more days to the end of M term

2nd day into week 10; Week 10 = END OF MICHAELMAS TERM. I've been waiting for you. Egawd, 3 more days left! That's Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. 3 semi-full days. Will I survive through the period? One thing for sure, time will tell. That's nonsense. Egawd, what am I saying. SEE WHAT 10 WEEKS IN LSE HAS DONE TO ME? It's driving me to the edge. It's making me lose more of my sanity. It's giving me headaches. Literally. :(

At this point, quite a number of LSE freshers are feeling discouraged/ depressed about the workload and results, disappointed about how LSE is like. Of course I am one of those people. Truth be told (or pardon me if I've repetitively said this), LSE is not how I've anticipated it. I mentioned once that it's very much like a normal university, which is pretty much true. For the past 7-8 weeks, I've been coming to university with an obligation. I didn't enjoy the thought of "it's a new day to learn new things". I dreaded when my alarm rings in the morning. Just because LSE has not been treating me well, or rather, not how I've expected it to. That was what I have in my mind all along for the past 7-8 weeks and 2 days.

Today, Prof. Alwyn (Economics lecturer) gave us his 2 cents before ending our last lecture for the term. I suppose he noticed that many of us aren't very satisfied with what we've been experiencing since term started. He told us that LSE is a school where the bar is raised for those who want to succeed. Students here are pushed to their limits. Those who consistently learn from their mistakes and adapt to the surrounding are those who are prone to succeed. Some pick it up fast, some slower and some may not even pick it up at all. Year 1s are normally those who suffered the most, but by Year 3, many will find the course much easier and manageable despite the fact that the level of difficulty is at a greater elevation. It's not about working hard (only- imo), but finding the right tactic and adapting well. By the end of the course, the certificate will tell the employers that hey, I (let's all assume) AM CAPABLE OF GOING THROUGH ALL THAT!The LSE branding means something. That's costly to fake.

His advice sounds pretty cliché as I had summarised it. Familiar, simple and logical. But how many lecturers actually do that? It was inspiring to have him encourage us in the very last week, when we are all feeling defeated from 10 weeks of timetable, quizzes and assignments. It feels different coming out from a lecturer. Somehow, this reminds me of the relationship between the commando and his battle troop. Like how inspiring speeches raises the troops' morale. Strategic, don't you think?

Speaking of troops, I was not spared from some spine-chilling stories from the army. Army as in the one most Singaporean boys (or men- you be the judge) have to go through once they are 18. From rumours to food to sightings. Imagine being strangled to death by an invisible figure in the middle of the night due to ba-kwa (pork) hidden in the locker! 11 pairs of eyes witnessing it as it happened. How can it not be traumatising?! Being amused upon seeing red cars after numerous weeks of basic training confined in site. How can that be not be deprived?! Oh, oh. How about this: NOT BEING ALLOWED TO BRING HANDPHONE CHARGER INTO CAMP!? "Love" put on the hot seat.

9.58PM. I'm out.

P.S. as always, abrupt exit.
P.P.S lol no, I did not get mugged! Silly person. :D

make it work?

Today was such a gorgeous day! The Sun was up, showering its brilliant rays in every direction. The sky was a clear blue with a couple of jet streams here and there. The trees are shedding their leaves now since it's the early/mid Autumn. I have been feeling slightly déjà vu-ish throughout the day. It felt... complex yet simple. A very contradictory feeling, but it was along the line!

I must say that I prefer Thursday of all the weekdays that I have to go to uni. Pourquoi? (pronounce: por-kwa. It French for "why") Well, it starts with French and ends with French, from 10am to 3pm. The timetable is weird in that sense. Between the 2 French classes, I have an hour of Maths lecture (I often snooze during this period) followed by an hour of Economics. The Economics tutor I was assigned to is so student-like (he is doing PhD). He laughs at his own jokes and is so informal! It's cute in a way and it helps to break the ice between him and the rest of us. My French tutor for the classes is such a cute lady. She reminds me of a ballerina/ salsa dancer somehow. I think it's her posture and how she ties her hair up. These 2 tutors of mine (on Thursdays) are always laughing. I hope that won't stop. It will definitely spoil my Thursdays. :(

The rest of the day was spent trying to get my maths lecture notes printed, but to no avail. I wasted about 50p during the process too. What a bummer. They should station more computers in the Library! & printers + cheaper printing fees/ F.O.C for students will be great. Oh yea, get Windows 7 installed! The computers here aren't even running on Windows Vista, but it's understandable since it's said to have a lot of bugs. SO YES, MORE VALUE FOR MY SCHOOL FEES PLEASEEE! (I hope the rest have similar thoughts as me)

Hmm, the past few days have been pretty so-so. Project Runway Season 6 & Mila have been throwing me with "make it work". :)

I feel like cycling today! & visit the London Aquarium... too bad no one was interested in either. I didn't ask around anyway! (笑)
i felt lonely today- でも, ありがとうミリちゃん for being there :)
(I can't stand the poses, that's why it's so small)

Ho-hum. What do you all think?

I feel like bingeing

It feels like I haven't blogged for a month. Gosh, time is passing by so slowly! :(

Recently, I find that LSE is not as awesome as what I thought it would be. Or rather, my expectations are actually irrelevant to the reality that I am facing now. I feel like I have been cheated by all the branding, marketing and all those tactics. LSE is actually a regular London university: lectures, classes and socialising activities. At this point, I would say that what sets it apart is the number of workshops they organise, the history and diversity of the student body. This list should build up in time to come... I hope. Ahhh, it'll be great if I live in halls for 1st year! I feel really bitter to think about the number of events I've been missing out on due to agreements that I've made (and being "considerate"- sigh).

Grr I can't believe I am actually complaining about the university which I have been dreaming of since Secondary 3/4? This sucks! Where has the optimism (the few drops of it) gone to? :(

French is probably the highlight so far. Yes, I am taking french as part of my course. However, I may be switching to full modules of maths and stats (read GEEK x3 and DOOM xinfinity) before 30th October/sooner. Sigh, stepping into university has forced me to start planning on my future path. The modules that I will be taking on my first year will affect the ones I will be taking on the subsequent years. & one of the methods which I use to decide which modules to take is to consider the modules that I may want to take in the future. Confusing? Oh well, the thing is I can't really seek advice from anyone since this is MY future and I have to plan for MY OWN future. (the advice that I've got so far are very neutral except a few anyway) & the more advice I seek, the more confused/ undivided I get.

Ahh.. I think this is the reason why I feel old and I dread being old. At last! Some light as to why I'm feeling so listless. The wonders of blogging. :)
dont worry b, told u so :)
Let's get back to the topic. Yes, French. The language makes me feel so vulnerable and weak, like a complete beginner (which I obviously am). It's been really long since I've picked up something entirely new. It makes me feel quite alive, learning something from scratch albeit the pace we are doing it. I just hate it when we learn complicated things before knowing the basics well. For example, today we were thrown a whole paragraph of introduction (where I study, which degree and why) and our homework was to memorize how to write it and how to say it! Arghhh but oh well, I guess that can't be helped. :/

It's currently 2 weeks into term (we call it Michaelmas Term here- how cool is that! One of the pleasures I get at LSE) and I've a lot of catching up to do. Seriously, a lot! Sigh. I haven't even gotten my textbook. Except for one, which is borrowed from the library. It's pretty gross because there's dried up liquid marks at the lower 1/3 of the book... with yellow edges. Think chromatography and the end point? Arghhh I'm spreading my stupidity and confusion around aren't I!! (Geez, I am actually talking in my blog post wts T_T)

Okay, this is getting to nowhere. I'm out!

(quite) a bit of recap

Dear diary... okay kidding. I'm feeling so corny and crappy right now! 4th day into Freshers' Week at LSE and I'm down with an unfortunate case of diarrhoea. The good news is that I never tasted anything from LSE Catering before except a small piece + a short whole sausage and a couple of sandwiches (everything except for the puny piece of sausage was from the 4th floor restaurant- yes that's the actual name of the restaurant). Bad news is it could be either home food (namely sister's cooking), Starbucks or Boobs's cooking. None of which I would like to blame. I hope I'll feel better in an hour. I'll be meeting one of my tutors then!

I have quite a bit to say since 25th September. Thanks for the lovely 3 (a small number of people yet so very dear to me: Shaun, Mila & Rachel- arranged by the time they arrived) who sent me off to Great Britain! The flight was a scary one due to the violent turbulence, or rather a sudden plunging down of the plane (twice actually). Shaun told me that it's caused by air pockets, something about air pressure and whole load of Physics I suppose. Regardless, THANK GOODNESS I ARRIVED SAFELY. The turbulence happened a couple of hours after the take off hence I was praying for safe arrival for the remaining 10+ hours. I tried to keep my mind off feeling scared by watching movies simultaneously. It helped somehow, to a certain extent. I've watched most of the nicer movies that were available. Dozed off for the last hour or so. :)

you 2! Thanks Rachel for rushing down from college and taking the long way to the airport! :D

LOL.

Looking around for a particular 2 adults.

I sense someone trying to imitate a pose of mine.

HAHAHAHHAHAH MILA! It's a cute unglam.

Sadly sitting in one corner feeling lonely and all. I was waiting for my sister to pick me up from the airport. (Safely touched down yey!)

Boots is like UK Watsons. I don't think I've mentioned it before in my A level years. I feel like I should talk more about the UK!

I didn't realise Sim Cards are actually sold in vending machines until Shaun told me last year when we were waiting for Nick's arrival.

There were so many Indians then. I felt like I arrived at the airport in Sri Lanka cause both lanes were filled with Indian faces!

I've aged from the flight.

I was dead sleepy, my head was spinning but I still decided to take a picture, which wasn't very flatting for either of us. (it's still nice to upload it)

26th was mainly unpacking and meeting up with some of ex CTC ppl (Boobs, Jessica, Felicia and Ashley) and one current one. It was a very brief meeting because Thashi managed to get me to buy Belgian waffles with her while the others decided to eat at a Korean restaurant. She went off after we got our waffles and I made my way to my sister's workplace supposedly for dinner. While walking and eating my waffle which was freaking sweet (till my teeth wanna drop ahahhahaa) my gastric (or appendix?) decided to hit me. I ended up meeting her, bought my toothbrush and headed straight home. The pain was unbearable. I quickly downed some porridge and the pain slowly died down- that's why I think it's gastric.

I resumed my packing on the 27th (Sunday). Goodness gracious, never realise I left my cupboard in such a state. The following pictures shall tell the story!

The cupboard my sister and I shared.

My compartment: stuffed with clothes.

My brother's cupboard which is pretty much emptied (all thanks to me!! I am thanking myself now wts)

My initial first compartment (all squashed and stuff- hello Vivienne Westwood!)

It's pretty much an empty shell. Left the heart in Singapore.

My socks, belt and scarves compartment.

Myself and the hat. Before packing.

AFTER packing. Emptied. Moved. Packed.

FILLED! & neat. It won't be neat for long though. Notice my favourite fleece teehee

Come Monday which was registration day! Got to know quite a number of people, yey! Hope I will remember their names. For me, Chinese names are so much more difficult to remember than English ones. I'm still trying to remember the names, though it's pretty challenging. Facebook kind of helps me to remember since it has pictures and the info... which is really useful! At least I've people to say Hi to on the first day! Tuesday and Wednesday were mainly Freshers' Fayre (think of all the societies) and Department (Accounting and Finance) Induction. I've joined 4 societies so far, totalled to 3 days of lunch (boo) and my sister refused to sponsor my activities. Oh well! It pays to socialise and get fit sometimes. So the past 3 days have been socialise, socialise and socialise. I didn't manage to take pictures though, it seems all touristy and no one actually took any pictures! Or maybe I wasn't observant enough. Anyway, next week it'll be all lectures and following week will be lectures & classes. As Julia calls them "the boring bit". Haha! :D

I think I'm down with jetlag. I've been feeling really drained and sleepy wayyyyy early and waking up at around 9 AM. I really hope it will go away soon!

Alright, time to dress up for uni! Mila's not replying my MSN :( oh well. (wow this is quite a long post innit!)

in the 8 days

I've got quite a few updates here!

First one I'm going to talk about is my A Level results. Yes, it's released on the 20th; 5 days ago. Omg, it was such a nerve-wrecking moment. Never in my life have I felt so scared before! Counting down to the moment of release didn't help to ease my anxiety. I don't usually do countdowns as such but this year is just weird. I think it's because so many of my peers were doing it. Peer pressure, you know. I'm surprisingly prone to that.

My results were neither satisfactory nor a disappointment. I managed to get double A & B (AABB), which is kind of expected because of the effort invested in the exams (guilty for that, really). Nonetheless, I managed to get my ass in LSE!!! Wow, it's quite an achievement I would say. It's a dream, or not. I'm worrying about how life would be like in there. I have heard things of how cold the lecturers are, no or little young/hunky/at least non-balding lecturers, how brand-concious the students are, at least a 5000 word essay per week, WILL I GRADUATE?!!?!?, among other things. I seriously think there will not be a moment in my life when I don't worry for single thing. Sighzxz!

2nd update: I've chopped off my mane. Oops, I meant hair. It's not much different. It actually makes me look more like a kid. The haircut was pretty pricey for the kind of cut I got. It's not classy, different, cool, flattering, attractive... not anything that would make you think "wow, that's a 50$ haircut" but more of "hmm, it's a 20$ hair cut". In short, I'm not satisfied by my hair. I'll let you be the judge:

BEFORE

AFTER

I am thinking of getting another haircut in the UK if it grows long and look worst. Might as well try the stylists there since my hairstyle is horrendous then.
